(NationalSentinel) Leftists in the Democratic Party and the mainstream media are already freaking out over the Republican congressional majority’s plans to eviscerate the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare, as the GOP moves quickly in the new 115th Congress to gut the bill.
As reported by The New York Times, Republicans may use a procedure known as “reconciliation” to fast-track repeal of the law and have it ready for President Donald Trump’s signature once he is inaugurated Jan. 20.
The process is sometimes called arcane, but it has been used often in the past 35 years to write some of the nation’s most important laws. “Reconciliation is probably the most potent budget enforcement tool available to Congress for a large portion of the budget,” the Congressional Research Service, a nonpartisan arm of Congress, has said.
While Democrats whine about this, it is appropriate to review just how the law was passed in the first place, and without a single Republican vote. Per Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Mark Walker, writing in Sept. 2015, they used–wait for it–the very same ‘arcane’ procedure to get the law to Obama’s desk:
Five years have passed since former speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) infamously admitted, “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it.” Americans now know what was hiding in Obamacare. And they don’t like it.
That’s why it is more important than ever for Republicans in Congress to honor the promises we have made to the American people and finally send an Obamacare-repeal bill to the president’s desk. We can do this, before the end of the year, through a procedure known as “budget reconciliation.”
Normally it takes 60 votes to move legislation in the Senate. But a reconciliation bill is considered “privileged,” so it can pass the Senate by a simple majority vote as long as it contains “policies affecting mainly permanent spending and revenue programs.”
Congressional Democrats used this very mechanism to force Obamacare through Congress on a party-line vote, to the president’s desk, and onto the backs of hard-working American families and businesses.
So when you hear the Left moan and cry about the method the GOP majority may employ to finally rid the nation of this dreadful law, remember that Democrats did the same thing to get it passed in the first place.
Either way, the process has begun. The Senate has already introduced a repeal resolution using the reconciliation process.
