(NationalSentinel) President Donald J. Trump said Wednesday that if the city of Chicago did not do more to reduce its spiraling homicide rate, he would “send in the Feds,” Fox News reported.
“If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible `carnage’ going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” Trump tweeted.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson responded late Tuesday, saying: “The Chicago Police Department is more than willing to work with the federal government to build on our partnerships with DOJ, FBI, DEA and ATF and boost federal prosecution rates for gun crimes in Chicago.”
Seriously though, what can Trump, as president, do? He can:
— Send in regular military forces following changes made in 2006 to the Posse Comitatus Act following Hurricane Katrina;
— Federalize Illinois National Guard units and send them onto Chicago streets;
— Send federal agents from the BATF, DEA and other agencies to assist local law enforcement;
— Threaten to withhold federal financial and other aid to the city unless it adopts a more aggressive approach to battling drug gangs and gang-related violence.
Reuters reported that The Chicago Tribune released data indicating that at least 228 people were shot in the city so far this year, a 5.5 percent increase compared to last year. Police reportedly said the numbers were incorrect and there were 182 shootings, the same as last year.
Trump said during his inauguration that he would make the safety and security of all Americans a top priority. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, a former Obama staffer and frequent Trump critic, is about to find out the president was serious.Click here for reuse options!
