Trump brings down the house in first address to Congress

The president won more converts last night

(NationalSentinel) President Donald J. Trump delivered his first address to Congress Tuesday evening, and the overwhelming reaction from viewers was tremendously positive.

As reported by CBS News, most viewers described Trump as “presidential” and “unifying” in a speech that even had some Democrats standing and clapping:

Viewers nationwide strongly approved of President Trump’s speech Tuesday night, with many Democrats joining Republicans in calling it “presidential” and positive in tone. Republicans and Independents found it “unifying,” though Democrats were slower to come around on that measure.

The President gained support for his policy plans among viewers: Interviewed before and after the address, they came away from it more positive on his ideas for the economy, immigration, terrorism, crime and Obamacare.

As is often the case in addresses to Congress, those who watched were more likely to be from the president’s party – in this case, Republicans. And they described a president they felt was keeping campaign promises and offering an “inspiring” message.

While longtime Trump supporters have endured a series of missteps and misstatements from him, they have watched him mature through the process of being a candidate, then president-elect, and now president. And it appears as though more Americans are warming to him as he settles into the job.

According to a CBS News/YouGov survey, 83 percent of Republicans and 24 percent of Democrats said they felt “more optimistic” about the future after listening to Trump’s speech, which was interrupted several times by members standing and clapping after a five-minute opening ovation.

About half of Democrats said they found the speech “divisive,” but that’s not unusual for the party, considering the manner in which they’ve treated him since he was inaugurated January 20. In all, 76 percent of those who watched the speech approved of it compared with 24 percent who did not.

“Each American generation passes the torch of truth, liberty and justice in an unbroken chain all the way down to the present.  That torch is now in our hands.  And we will use it to light up the world.  I am here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength, and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart.  A new chapter of American Greatness is now beginning.  A new national pride is sweeping across our nation.  And a new surge of optimism is placing impossible dreams firmly within our grasp,” Trump said as he opened his speech.
