(National Sentinel) Healthcare reform: President Donald J. Trump put a shot across the bow of the Republican-controlled Senate Wednesday, telling CBN host Pat Robertson he’s just waiting for an Obamacare repeal measure so he can finally sign it.
“I am sitting in the Oval Office with a pen in hand,” he said, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon.
Trump also pointed out what many observers (and some congressional Republicans as well) noted some time ago: The GOP-controlled Congress passed numerous Obamacare repeal measures when they “didn’t mean anything” and sent them to President Obama, knowing he would veto them.
But now, he says, when Americans who gave control of Congress and the White House to the party in November are counting on Republicans to follow through on their years-long pledge to get rid of the most heinous health care legislation in our history, they’re stalling.
“Now we have a president that’s waiting to sign it,” Trump said. “I have [a] pen in hand so now it means something. You know, those other times, those many, many times that they passed it, it didn’t mean anything.”
Robertson asked the president what would happen if the GOP failed to follow through.
“I will be very angry about it, and a lot of people will be very upset,” he said. “I hope that they do it. They’ve been promising it for years.”
Did the president think Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can “pull it off?”
“Mitch has to pull it off. He’s working very hard. He’s got to pull it off,” Trump said.
Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R., Texas) announced Tuesday that there would be a vote on a health care bill next week. Republicans delayed their August recess to make more progress on getting the votes necessary for passage, the Free Beacon noted.
As we reported earlier this week, we’re not so confident in McConnell’s ability to deliver. We think his donors are much more important to him than the American people.
We’d love to be wrong.
