(National Sentinel) West Wing: Since before then-President-elect Donald J. Trump took office, the Deep State, Obama-era appointees, and #nevertrump careerists burrowed into the federal bureaucracy began leaking to the media personal and oftentimes highly sensitive information that both embarrassed the incoming administration and embroiled it in scandal.
Last week, Trump appeared to have had enough of it.
The president replaced embattled White House spokesman Sean Spicer with long-time supporter Anthony Scaramucci, installing him as communications director amid efforts to shore up his inner circle with someone he obviously believes is well-suited to root out the leakers.
In interviews on Sunday, Scaramucci sounded determined to do just that, threatening to fire anyone caught in the act and, perhaps even, taking it a step further — prosecution of those who leak classified information, which is a felony.
“[W]e have to get the leaks stopped. If we don’t get them stopped… I’m a businessperson so I will take dramatic action to stop those leaks,” he told Fox News’ Chris Wallace. “If the leaks don’t stop I’m going to pare down the staff because it’s just not right…. Something is going on inside the White House that the president does not like. We will fix it.”
In a separate interview with John Dickerson of CBS News, he was asked how he’ll deal with the leakers.
“They’re going to get fired,” he said. “I’m just going to make it very, very clear, okay? Tomorrow I’m going to have a staff meeting. And it’s going to be a very binary thing. I’m not going to make any prejudgments about anybody on that staff. If they want to stay on the staff, they’re going to stop leaking.”
Axios reported further that Scaramucci also believes that the disgustingly dishonest “mainstream” media has been publishing no small amount of fake news as well based on bogus “leaked” information, but that he will attempt to “deescalate” tensions with the Trump White House via more engagement. We’ll see how that works out.
Meantime, there’s no question that the leaking — much of it fake but no small amount of it legitimate — is not only hurting the Trump administration, it’s harming the country as well. As The National Sentinel reported last month, intelligence officials have said some of the information being leaked has harmed national security.
The Washington Free Beacon noted further:
The classified leaks, which are being handed to sympathetic journalists by former Obama administration officials who left the government and by holdovers still serving in the Trump administration, have damaged a number of ongoing operations, ranging from American efforts to prevent Russian infiltration of the United States to Israeli efforts against ISIS, sources said.
One of the most damaging leaks pertained to information passed along to friendly establishment reporters (who, frankly, should also bear some responsibility for publishing classified information) regarding the recent terrorist bombing in Manchester, Britain, while English authorities were still actively investigating. (Related: After leaks strain U.S.-U.K. relationship, Trump and Sessions vow to find the culprits.)
As for Trump, he has tried to point out on numerous occasions that the real “story” isn’t the information contained in the leak — mostly aimed at perpetuating the myth that he “colluded” with Russia to “steal the election” from Hillary Clinton — but the act of leaking classified materials, which are highly illegal and violate numerous federal statutes.
“The alleged leaks coming out of government agencies are deeply troubling,” Trump said in a statement following the Manchester bombing. “These leaks have been going on for a long time, and my administration will get to the bottom of this. The leaks of sensitive information pose a grave threat to our national security. I am asking the Department of Justice and other relevant agencies to launch a complete review of this matter, and if appropriate, the culprit should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Added Attorney General Jeff Sessions: “These leaks cannot be tolerated, and we will make every effort to put an end to it.”
That time appears to have arrived.
