(National Sentinel) Campus Activism: When you let the inmates run the asylum, you get chaos. Ditto when cowardly college administrators turn their institution over to rowdy punk students who have been indoctrinated into the Marxist ideology.
As reported by The College Fix, Oregon’s Evergreen State College, where a rowdy group of progressive students took over the school in May and June, is facing a $2.1 million funding shortage and will have to lay off staff following a major drop-off in enrollment:
Administrators at The Evergreen State College have announced that the embattled school faces a massive $2.1 million budget shortfall due in part to a drop in enrollment, and the institution has already handed out some temporary layoff notices as officials grapple with balancing the books.
In an Aug. 28 memo to the campus community titled “Enrollment and Budget Update,” officials report that fall 2017-18 registration is down about 5 percent, from 3,922 students to 3,713. But the problem is nearly all of the students they lost are nonresidents, who traditionally pay a much higher tuition to attend, officials explained in the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The College Fix.
“This creates the need for significant budget cuts in the immediate future,” the memo states, adding that the university late last month already handed out temporary layoff notices to 17 facilities staff members.
“Some notices were rescinded as we try to use scarce local dollars to keep people employed,” the memo states. “… However, if the capital budget crisis at the state level continues indefinitely, layoffs will become impossible to avoid.”
“… In a college where 89 percent of the operating budget is in salaries and benefits, it is impossible to reduce the budget by substantial amounts without giving up positions. In anticipation of this, we will soon be announcing a hiring freeze.”
The memo doesn’t discuss it, but there’s no doubt the drop-off in enrollment is related, in large part, to the idiocy of Left-wing students seized control of the school after a white professor dared to question the ‘wisdom’ of banning all white students from the campus for a day:
Biology professor Bret Weinstein was berated by dozens of students outside of his classroom Tuesday morning for refusing to participate in an event in which white people were invited to leave campus for a day. Now, he says police have told him to hold his classes off campus due to safety concerns.
Weinstein’s ‘crime’ was writing a ‘racist’ email opposing the “Day of Absence & Day of Presence” demonstration, in which he said, “On a college campus, one’s right to speak — or to be — should never be based on skin color.”
Evergreen State’s problem is similar to that of the University of Missouri, whose idiot administrators allowed Black Lives Matter to take over policy and dictate what can only be described as racist demands in 2015. Reports noted that the university’s flagship campus in Columbia lost 2,100 students as the 2016 academic year began, or some 7 percent of its normal freshmen enrollment — leaving a $30 million budget gap.
The Daily Caller noted:
It’s not hard to find the cause of the school’s woes. Last year, the black activist group Concerned Student 1950 launched a major protest effort, claiming the school was a hotbed of racism and demanding the ouster of MU president Thomas Wolfe. After black members of the football team went on strike, their demands were swiftly met. At the same time, professor Melissa Click was caught on camera attacking a student journalist trying to cover the protests, and calling for “muscle” to carry him off if he refused to leave. Though Click was eventually fired, campus officials otherwise focused on trying to placate protesters and meet their demands, but this only spurred follow-up protests.
Added Investors Business Daily:
The University of Missouri thought it could win black students’ hearts and minds by throwing its president to the race-mongering wolves. But it only lost future enrollees with such shameless appeasement.
Mizzou is lamenting a sudden drop-off in student applications. Freshman applications in 2015 fell 5% from the previous year, while graduate student applications plunged 19%. Mizzou officials cite racial protests that rocked the school last fall.
This trend will continue as long as cowardly school administrators continue to believe that providing students with a quality education is less important than stoking racial animosity.
