(National Sentinel) Mass Murder: A gunman rained fire down on a crowd of concern-goers in Las Vegas Sunday night from a 32nd floor window at the Mandalay Bay Casino-Hotel, killing at least 50 people and wounding 200-plus before cops burst in and killed him, finding an arsenal of weapons.
As reported by the UK’s Daily Mail:
Police say the shooter was 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of nearby Mesquite, Nevada, who opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas Village from a room across the street in the Mandalay Bay Hotel shortly after 10pm.
Officers say Paddock was shot and killed after they breached a room in the hotel, where he had stashed an ‘arsenal’ of weapons used during the massacre.
Investigators are now raiding the Mesquite home he shared with Marilou Danley, described as his ‘companion’ and a person of interest. Police say they have located Danley, but didn’t specify whether she was in custody.
Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, said investigations are still ongoing and police have not yet determined a motive.
Paddock fired into a crowd attending an outdoor country music festival, reports said.
In videos at the scene, automatic weapons fire can be heard raining down on panicked concert goers, some falling as they were struck by bullets:
Video from close to the stage shows people hitting the floor as others crawl to safety or run for their lives. Audio from further back in the crowd captured several bursts of sustained automatic gunfire.
Witnesses said ‘hundreds’ of rounds of ammunition were emptied into the crowd, with Paddock stopping several times to reload as he carried out his massacre.
Among those shot dead at the concert were two off-duty police officers. Attendees said a large number of law enforcement and military personnel had been attending the show.
Two on-duty police officers who engaged the shooter have been hospitalized – one in critical condition, the other less-severely wounded. They have not been identified.
One witness at the concert told DailyMail.com that a woman had entered the crowd with a male companion and screamed ‘They’re all around… You’re all going to f***ing die today’ just 45 minutes before the gunfire broke out.
The woman was described as being Hispanic and in her 50s; she and the man were escorted out of the venue by security.
Police, thus far, have not discussed a motive. But clearly what occurred was an act of domestic terrorism.
0822 EDT: This is Paddock:
Shooter: 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock, of Mesquite, Nevada.
Also, per Raw Story:
62-year-old Marilou Danley, was taken into custody Monday morning as a person of interest in the case.
Paddock was known to local law enforcement and had a criminal past, investigators said, but no additional details were available.
0852: Per Reuters:
The suspect was a local Las Vegas man who acted alone and was not believed to be connected to any militant group, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters.
“We have no idea what his belief system was,” Lombardo said. “Right now, we believe he was the sole aggressor and the scene is static.”
Lombardo said rumors of other shootings or explosives such as car bombs in the area were false. Video taken of the attack showed panicked crowds fleeing as sustained rapid gunfire ripped through the area.
Las Vegas’s casinos, nightclubs and shopping draw some 3.5 million visitors from around the world each year and the area was packed with visitors when the shooting broke out shortly after 10 p.m. (0400 GMT).
0856: “This was obviously well-planned, they waited for a major, open air event, and obtained a room facing it,” retired FBI special agent and former national FBI spokesman John Iannarelli, who drove past the scene of the event just moments before the shooting took place, told Fox News.
1152 EDT: The body count has risen to 58, with more than 515 wounded.
