(National Sentinel) Political Sport: The National Football League picked the wrong things to “protest” — the American flag and National Anthem — and the wrong president — Donald Trump — to feud with.
“Why is the NFL getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem, Flag and Country? Change tax law!” Trump wrote in a post on Twitter, as reported by Reuters.
Trump issued his call as he gears up to push through a major overhaul of the tax code, which is already in trouble in the GOP-controlled Congress, thanks mostly to establishment Republican liars who used to stump for tax reform before they became #neverTrump RINOs.
The president has heavily criticized the league and its owners for allowing players to take a knee or sit on the bench instead of standing in respect during the playing of the anthem and unfurling of the flag before games. Players say they are protesting to hightlight alleged social injustices and police brutality against blacks.
The league has so far responded by defending players’ First Amendment right to speech and expression — a constitutional position to take, to be sure, but not a very smart one, financially, considering the NFL has went from being the most popular, well-thought-of sport in the country to the least popular in a matter of just a few weeks, having lost nearly one-third of its core fan base.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after his team’s close loss at home to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday that any player who protests by kneeling or sitting during the anthem from here on won’t play.
Meanwhile, Miami Dolphins owner Steve Ross is now requiring all of his players to stand during the anthem as well.
But it may be too late to woo back a healthy portion of the lost fan base. Between the league’s financially stupid position regarding protesting players and the Left’s constant attacks on the game, it’s very likely that pro football’s heyday is over.
