(National Sentinel) Collusion: President Donald J. Trump has waded into the controversy over the infamous “Russia dossier,” calling on his Justice Department to investigate his Democratic president opponent’s ties to it.
In a series of tweets on Sunday, Trump criticized the ongoing investigations into alleged Russian “collusion” in last year’s election, adding that there was a distinct “lack of investigation” into Hillary Clinton, The Hill reported.
“Instead they look at phony Trump/Russia ‘collusion,’ which doesn’t exist. The Dems are using this terrible (and bad for our country) Witch Hunt for evil politics, but the R’s are now fighting back like never before. There is so much GUILT by Democrats/Clinton, and now the facts are pouring out. DO SOMETHING!” Trump tweeted.
The president was responding to reports last week that the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee funded the creation of the dossier, which has been widely debunked as largely fake.
According to the Washington Post:
The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.
Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.
After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the company in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Before that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by an unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.
According to The Hill, special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the dossier and the conditions surrounding its creation. It was written by former British spy Christopher Steele.
News of the dossier’s financing comes as a legal battle was shaping up between the House Intelligence Committee and Fusion GPS over the latter’s bank records. The House panel had subpoenaed the banking records in order to find out who was paying Fusion GPS to create the document.
