(National Sentinel) NFHell: President Donald J. Trump on Sunday criticized Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch for sitting during the American National Anthem but standing to show respect for the Mexican national anthem during a game against the New England Patriots in Mexico City.
“Next time NFL should suspend him for remainder of season. Attendance and ratings way down.”
As The Hill reported, Lynch sat down during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” but stood for the Mexican anthem.
And in October, Lynch wore a shirt to one of his games that said, “EVERYBODY VS. TRUMP.”
The president, like millions of fans, see those demonstrations — which players say are in response to alleged racial injustices and police brutality — as disrespect of the country, the anthem and the military.
The league, however, has responded that it was not prepared to require players to stand during the anthem, alluding to their First Amendment right to free speech.
The president does have a point, however, when he said that ratings and viewership for NFL games are down this year. By late last month, ratings had declined by about 10 percent in most markets, owing to the “Trump effect.”
