(National Sentinel) Domestic Terrorism: FBI Director Christopher Wray announced Thursday that his agency has begun investigating people “motivated to commit violent criminal activity” linked to “Antifa ideology.”
Wray made the announcement about the investigation before members of the House Homeland Security Committee. He emphasized that the bureau as not investigating members for their political ideology, but only for crimes connected to the ideology, reported the Washington Examiner.
“We do have a very active domestic terrorism program,” Wray told the committee. “And while we’re not investigating Antifa as Antifa — that’s an ideology and we don’t investigate ideologies — we are investigating a number of what we would call anarchist-extremist investigations where we have properly predicated subjects of people who are motivated to commit violent criminal activity on kind of an Antifa ideology.”
Wray added that the bureau is examining at least 1,000 instances involving possible domestic terrorism. All of those instances are being pursued based on their level of threat, not “ideology, opinion, or rhetoric,” said Wray.
“In order to open an investigation there has to be credible evidence of federal crime, [and] threat of force or violence to further a political or social goal,” said the director. “And if we have all of those three things then we open a very aggressive investigation.”
The FBI and Department of Homeland Security labeled Antifa members of a “domestic terror” group during the Obama administration.
The designation was tied to multiple acts of politically motivated violence mostly during campaign events on behalf of then-GOP candidate and nominee Donald J. Trump.
