(National Sentinel) Busted: At least five emails that were determined to be classified were found among some 2,800 documents stored on a laptop belonging to former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York, whose then-wife Huma Abedin was a top aide to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a conservative legal watchdog group announced on Friday.
As reported by the UK’s Daily Mail, the group, Judicial Watch, had filed suit to obtain the documents from the State Department. The group’s president, Tom Fitton, speculated in October that the laptop likely contained classified information.
At least five emails determined to be classified were found among 2,800 documents stored on a laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner, whose then-wife Huma Abedin was deputy chief of staff to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The State Department released its documents Friday afternoon. They included eight pages that were classified at the “confidential level,” the third-most sensitive level established by the U.S. government.
The Daily Mail noted that the confidential classification level is given to information in which unauthorized disclosure “reasonably could be expected to cause damage to national security.”
“The emails date from 2010, 2011 and 2012 and concern discussions with Middle East leaders including some from Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Hamas and the Palestinian Authority,” the paper noted in online editions.
The State Department redacted large portions, including entire pages, before releasing the documents to Judicial Watch.
Three of the emails were sent either to or from an address called “BBB Backup.” One email describes that as a backup of a Blackberry Bold 9700 that is believed to have belonged to Abedin.
One page is heavily redacted and mentions “Egyptian MFA on Hamas-PLO Talks,” referencing the Iranian proxy group and the Palestine Liberation Organization, more commonly known today as the Palestinian Authority.
Another heavily redacted portion is a four-page call sheet that was meant to guide Clinton through a sensitive phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The FBI recovered the sensitive emails from the laptop last year, but no charges were ever recommended or filed against Abedin, Weiner, or Clinton.
Critics were quick to point out that Clinton and those close to her have repeatedly put U.S. national security at risk, but so far without suffering any of the same legal penalties other Americans have experienced for lesser crimes.
Improperly handling classified information is a felony. It was unclear whether Weiner, once a U.S. congressman who resigned over sexting women onlinein 2011, had the proper security clearances to handle classified information.
When in Congress, he did not serve on any committees that normally would have required such a clearance, the Daily Mail reported.
“This is a major victory. After years of hard work in federal court, Judicial Watch has forced the State Department to finally allow Americans to see these public documents,” Fitton said in a statement following his organization’s release of the emails.
“It will be in keeping with our past experience that Abedin’s emails on Weiner’s laptop will include classified and other sensitive materials. That these government docs were on Anthony Weiner’s laptop dramatically illustrates the need for the Justice Department to finally do a serious investigation of Hillary Clinton’s and Huma Abedin’s obvious violations of law,” he continued.
