(National Sentinel) Failure to Act: A Republican state lawmaker is calling on Florida Gov. Rick Scott to remove Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel from office after reports surfaced last week that three of his deputies failed to enter the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during alleged gunman Nikolas Cruz’s rampage.
As reported by local affiliate CBS12, Rep. Bill Hager (Boca Raton), chairman of the Florida House of Justice Appropriations, said Scott should use a power the governor has under Florida law to remove the sheriff for neglect of duty and incompetence in regards to the shooting, in which 14 students and three school personnel were killed.
The local affiliate reported further:
In his letter to the governor on Saturday, Hager said that various media outlets reported that the School Resource Officer, Scot Peterson, and three deputies under Sheriff Israel’s command “were on campus at the time of the attack and chose to take cover themselves rather than stepping up to protect our students.”
Rep. Hager also mentioned the number of times police were called to Nikolas Cruz’s home.
“The Sheriff was fully aware of the threat this individual presented to the community and chose to ignore it,” Rep. Hager said, adding that the recent failure was not the first involving the Broward County Sheriff’s Department.
He reminded Scott that the sheriff’s office failed to set up a unified command after a shooting incident in 2017 at the Fort Lauderdale Airport, among other things.
Hager’s legislative aid told the local affiliate that due to this, Republican representative proposes “that certain dollars currently scheduled for appropriation for the Broward Sheriff’s Office be redirected…to initiate a pilot program in Broward County that will integrate and analyze data from various law enforcement, courts, state agencies, and school districts to better assess risk and keep our citizens safe.”
Others have criticized the FBI for failing to act as well, after being tipped off at least twice that Cruz was an unhinged risk.
Also, local police had been called to his home dozens of times in the past but he was never apprehended or provided any mental health services. He had also been kicked out of school at least once and was known by students to be unstable, according to reports.
