(National Sentinel) Terrorism Fears: Authorities say that multiple suspicious packages containing explosive materials have been sent to at least three military installations around the metro Washington, D.C., area.
Officials told local Fox 5 DC that one package was sent to the National Defense University on Fort McNair in southwest DC around 8:30 a.m. EST on Monday.
The building was evacuated while an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Fort Belvoir, Va., analyzed the package. Officials said the EOD team found black powder residue.
An X-ray of the suspicious package further indicated that a GPS and expedient fuse were also attached to a device inside, however, the package was rendered safe a short time later.
Later Monday officials at Fort Belvoir said they, too, had received a suspicious package but it was also rendered safe.
“The FBI responded to multiple government facilities today for the reports of suspicious packages. Each package was collected for further analysis by the FBI,” said Nicole Schwab, a spokesperson for the FBI Washington Field Office.
Fox News reported further that the packages were being examined at the FBI’s field office in Quantico, Va.
