(National SentinelVolatile: Russia is blaming Israel for an overnight missile attack on a Syrian airbase, as much of the world is condemning President Bashar Assad for an alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians over the weekend.

The deadly attack on the airbase comes after more than 60 people were killed in a suspected poison gas attack on a rebel-held enclave near the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Reports said that two Israeli air force F-15s fired a total of eight missiles at the T4 airbase in central Syria. Reports added that five of the missiles were shot down by Syrian air defenses.

The three remaining missiles struck their targets, reports said, killing at least 14 at the airbase including Iranian personnel. The missiles were fired from Lebanese airspace.

The Pentagon denied any involvement in the airstrike overnight at the Syrian air base, Fox News reported.

“However, we continue to closely watch the situation and support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable,” a Defense Department spokesman said.

President Donald J. Trump threatened there would be a “big price…to pay” after reports of a suspected chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma, blaming President Bashar Assad and his international allies including Russia.

Trump also singled out Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran as being responsible.

“Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria. Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price…to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!” he tweeted.

The Assad government has denied the attack.
