‘Largest’ naval strike force since Iraq war heading for Syria: Report

(National SentinelWar: A report on Friday said a “huge” U.S. naval strike force believed to be the largest since the Iraq war is currently steaming towards Syria.

The UK’s Evening Standard notes:

The military fleet that set off overnight is believed to be the largest strike force deployed since the 2003 Iraq war, the Times reported.

And a Russian-controlled anti-submarine aircraft was also moved into place at an airbase in west Syria to counter possible strikes, according to the newspaper.

The report said that President Donald J. Trump and British Prime Minister Teresa May agreed Thursday to work toward a response to the Syrian government’s alleged use of poison gas against a rebel enclave near Damascus a week ago.

The Syrian government has denied the allegations, as has Syria’s chief ally, Russia. Indeed, as The National Sentinel reported, there have been some indications that the attack may have even been conducted by rebel forces in order to stir emotions in the West and trigger a military response.

The Evening Standard further noted that British submarines armed with cruise missiles are also believed to be within striking distance of Syria.

In agreeing to work together on the international response, May and Trump said there was a need “to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime.”

The British government said ministers were in agreement that it was “highly likely” that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the attack on Douma.

A statement from the British government said there had been agreement around the Cabinet table that those actions should never go “unchallenged” and that the UK would continue to work with the U.S. and France to coordinate an international response.

Trump was less clear about an imminent attack, however, tweeting Thursday that an attack “could be soon or not so soon at all.”

That said, the president confirmed Thursday that missiles were headed towards Syria.

“Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’” Trump tweeted. “You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”

Earlier reports noted that the Syrians are expecting an attack and as such have moved forces out of their bases and co-located them aside Russian forces.
