(National Sentinel) Questionable: President Donald J. Trump on Friday questioned the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller as improper because it was based on an “illegal act” committed by fired FBI Director James Comey.
“James Comey illegally leaked classified documents to the press in order to generate a Special Council [sic]? Therefore, the Special Council was established based on an illegal act? Really, does everybody know what that means?” he tweeted.

Trump tweeted his comments after details broke regarding the Justice Department inspector general’s office was looking into whether Comey leaked classified information after giving a friend personal memos of his conversations with the president.
Comey redacted some of the information in those memos. And, as FBI director, he had authority to release information he had deemed unclassified.
But some details contained in his memos was upgraded to “confidential” after he was fired by Trump.
Comey gave a total of four memos to friend Daniel Richman, a former federal prosecutor who is now a professor at Columbia University School of Law, sources said. Three were considered unclassified at the time and one was classified.
The fired FBI director has testified before Congress his hope in leaking the memos was to spur a special counsel probe of President Donald J. Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign over alleged “collusion” with Russia.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller after Comey was fired and after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any Justice Department dealings with alleged Trump campaign collusion with Russia.
The Justice Department late Thursday released Comey’s memos, which show he never felt threatened or obstructed in any way by the president.
What’s more, according to a statement from the House Intelligence Committee, the memos show that Trump wanted the allegations of “Russian collusion” fully investigated and that Comey obviously had a double standard for dealing with Trump versus his predecessor, former President Obama.
Also, the panel notes that on at least one occasion, the memos prove that Comey leaked classified information to the media for the express purpose of triggering a special counsel investigation not because the president had obstructed him, but because he was upset over his firing.
