Hey, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are you listening? Venezuelan leader ADMITS socialism has FAILED

(National SentinelLife Lesson: Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rising star in the increasingly far-Left Democratic Party, has been running from TV show to TV show proclaiming the joys of socialism.

During a recent appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, she offered a rambling ‘defense’ of an economic model that revolves around government theft and redistribution — taking from those who are the most productive and giving to those who are the least productive.

In the end, as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once observed of the socialist economic model, you will always run out of other people’s money.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Boston University-trained economist, is just the latest young socialist who thinks she has the magic formula to finally make this never-before-successful economic model work.

She should consult with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has just admitted to Venezuelan legislators that his socialist economic model has failed.

Agence France-Presse reports:

Under-fire Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro admitted his economic model has “failed” in the wake of food and medicine shortages and public service paralysis, such as Tuesday’s power failure that affected 80 percent of Caracas.

The production models we’ve tried so far have failed and the responsibility is ours, mine and yours,” Maduro told his ruling PSUV party congress, as Venezuela looks to tackle chronic inflation the International Monetary Fund predicted would reach one million percent this year.

“Enough with the whining… we need to produce with or without (outside) aggression, with or without blockades, we need to make Venezuela an economic power,” he added late Monday, with the country grappling with a four-year long recession.

“No more whining, I want solutions comrades!”

The socialist government has over recent years nationalized various industry sectors such as cement and steel, expropriated hundreds of businesses, including supermarket chains, and lately brought in the army to control street markets to guard against rising prices.

It has also fixed prices on various goods and imposed a monopoly on foreign exchange.

I estimate it will take about two years to reach a high level of stability and see the first symptoms of new and economic prosperity, without for one second affecting social security and protection,” added the president.

Actually, Mr. President, your economy will continue to free-fall as long as long your economic model remains…socialism.

For as you have served as just the latest example, you have proven once more that socialism cannot succeed as an economic model because it saps innovation, kills productivity, destroys incentive, and wipes out employment. Socialism is one of the fastest ways to destroy an economy and impoverish a nation.

Someone should tap Ocasio-Cortez on the shoulder and let her know the latest grand experiment in socialist economic policy has failed, and the man who helped implement it admits as much.

If she’s willing to learn, Maduro, in a roundabout way, can teach Ocasio-Cortez something Boston University obviously didn’t: Capitalism is the way to build a successful economy.

  1. With deference to the author (I am certainly no scholar of isms), I believe there is another more basic reason that Socialism never works. It may be the primary reason that triggers all the factors mentioned in this article (i.e., “… it saps innovation, kills productivity, destroys incentive, and wipes out employment.”) And the reason is… Socialism puts those of power and authority in charge of that very power and authority, with little or NO accountability. The nature of Socialism, mixed with the baser nature of human weakness, opens the doors for abject corruption. You know…. the fox guarding the hen house.

Those in power might begin (although, doubtful!) with best intentions, but it devolves quickly into rationalizations and false justifications for doing the slight-of-hand tricks they begin doing – for the common good, of course. Those who get in the way are then said to be treasonous, and on it goes down the road to full-on thievery, and even murders. They begin to believe their own lies and it becomes harder and harder to rout them out.

I am an American citizen who lived in Venezuela for many years under a strict dictator, and under more democratic regimes, as well. It is tragic to see a country with such resources and diverse beauty, once filled with young, eager and hopeful people, turn into the hell hole it is today. They had possibilities – now they have almost nothing.

Maduro reminds me of an alcoholic who says “Yes, I do seem to have a problem, so I need to stop drinking so much. Probably.” Neither he, nor his regime, will come up with any solutions, because he and many others still think Socialism can work if they just tweek things a little.
