Outgoing Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri has some words of advice for incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other “progressive” uber-Left socialists: Alienate white working-class voters at your peril.
During an interview with CNN, McCaskill appeared to lament the fact that “Democratic Socialists” like Ocasio-Cortez are pulling her party to the extreme Left, which she thinks is a mistake.
“I hope she also realizes that the parts of the country that are rejecting the Democratic Party, like a whole lot of white working-class voters, need to hear about how their work is going to be respected, and the dignity of their jobs, and how we can really stick to issues that we can actually accomplish something on,” McCaskill said.
The two-term senator, who lost her reelection bid to Missouri GOP Attorney General Josh Hawley, noted further that Ocasio-Cortez talks a lot, but “the rhetoric is cheap.”
“Getting results is a lot harder,” she cautioned.
McCaskell’s parting shots at her party are an indication that she believes Democrats are moving too far away from their traditional base: Blue-collar workers.
She practiced what she is preaching, at least in terms of her reelection bid. She raised eyebrows in late October when she began airing an ad claiming she is “not one of those crazy Democrats.”
Except that when she was in office, McCaskill voted like ‘one of those crazy Democrats,’ supporting the Obamacare legislation and opposing Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, she appears to be a true believer in terms of her socialist ideas. She’s already pushing for a “Green New Deal,” which will be the greatest expansion of government in years if it ever passes. And a lot of Democrats are lining up behind her.
