While President Donald Trump remained in Washington, D.C., over the Christmas holiday rather than head to his resort in Florida, most congressional leaders left the nation’s capital seemingly uninterested in finding a way to reopen shuttered government agencies.
Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was one of them.
POTUS and FLOTUS Melania Trump did leave D.C. once — they flew to Germany and Iraq to visit U.S. troops. But otherwise, the president said on Christmas Eve he was “waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal.”
Pelosi, meanwhile, flew to Hawaii, where she was spotted at a posh, expensive hotel.
The Washington Free Beacon reported:
Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi is spending the government shutdown at a luxury resort in Hawaii…
Pelosi, who has put blame squarely on President Donald Trump for the current government shutdown, was spotted Thursday vacationing in Hawaii at the Fairmont Orchid resort, where room accommodations range from $899-a-night for a standard room to $4,899-a-night for the presidential suite.
The resort, on Hawaii’s Big Island, features a golf course, six restaurants, and a 10,000-square-foot oceanfront pool. It also features a “Spa Without Walls,” where the 110-minute Ali’i Royal Experience is available for $369 and a 50-minute couples massage runs $549, according to the spa menu. While at the spa, guests can snack on a gluten-free grilled prawn summer roll for $19.
Mind you, we don’t care if members of Congress want to take some time off during the holidays. That’s not the point.
The point is they can’t be giant hypocrites when doing so, as Pelosi clearly is.
She can’t claim to be so concerned about furloughed government employees and border security, then jet off somewhere luxurious that is about as far away from D.C. as you can get while blaming the shutdown and the inability to come to an agreement over wall funding on the president — who stayed behind specifically to work out a solution.
And yes, it was Democrats who walked away from negotiations, as The Daily Caller reported:
Democratic leaders walked away from the negotiating table Thursday in the midst of a government shutdown over funding for border security, a senior White House official tells The Daily Caller.
The government partially shut down shortly before Christmas after President Donald Trump refused to sign an appropriations bill that did not contain his requested $5 billion for border wall funding. Since then, Republicans and Democrats — who will take control of the House in the New Year – have been looking to strike a deal to reopen the government.
On Thursday afternoon, however, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders accused Democrats of blowing off a potential deal earlier this week.
“The Administration understands this crisis and made a reasonable, common-sense solution to Democrats five days ago – we’ve not received a single response,” Sanders said in a statement. “The President and his team stayed in Washington over Christmas hoping to negotiate a deal that would stop the dangerous crisis on the border, protect American communities, and re-open the government.”
Democrats have no compunction in pulling these kinds of political stunts because they lack the hypocrisy gene.
It’s not clear what kind of compromise, if any, POTUS will agree to in regards to demands for true border security which can only be achieved with a wall.
But what is clear is that Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders aren’t concerned about any of it.
Update: The Washington Examiner reported Friday afternoon that a reporter contacted Pelosi’s office for confirmation of the Free Beacon’s story, but was told, “I’m not allowed to talk about that” by the person who answered the phone at the “press desk.”
