House Democrats have inserted language into a spending bill the chamber is expected to vote on later today aimed at ending the current partial shutdown that expands access to abortion but contains zero dollars for POTUS Donald Trump’s border wall.
The measure repeals a provision called for by the president requiring foreign nongovernmental organizations to certify they won’t “perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.”
The provision, known as the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy, once was called the Mexico City Policy, or known as the “global gag rule” by opponents.
In addition, the bill increases funding by $5 million for the UN’s Population Fund, to $37.5 million. Pro-life groups opposed the program because they note it participates in coercive abortions and involuntary sterilizations, the Washington Examiner reports.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List, said in a statement Democrats were “already trying to foist a radical pro-abortion agenda on the nation.”
“A strong majority of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion,” she said, noting further that repealing the president’s policy on nongovernmental organizations would make “taxpayers complicit in the exportation of abortion and destruction of countless unborn children around the world.
“This is unconscionable and we oppose the bill in the strongest terms,” Dannenfelser added.
Democrats will also introduce a second bill to reopen the government that allegedly addresses “border security” but is sans wall funding.
Neither measure has much chance of passing, given Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s statement earlier noting that border security bills without the president’s requested wall funding are dead on arrival.
“The legislation that the House Democrats are reportedly planning to introduce and vote on tomorrow will not be a serious contribution to the negotiations that are ongoing between the administration and the incoming Democratic majority in the House,” McConnell said Wednesday.
“It isn’t comprehensive, it ignores the needs of border security, it’s exactly the kind of proposal you’d expect if the incoming House Democrats are choosing to stage a political sideshow rather than doing the hard work of helping govern the country. In other words, a total non-starter.”
And the president wouldn’t sign it anyway.
All of which goes to prove, again, that Democrats really aren’t serious about protecting the country or ensuring that Border Patrol agents currently fending off thousands of migrants are doing so without getting paid.
“They’re not being compensated at all right now. I mean, these men and women are working without being paid and they’re putting their lives on the line for their country,” former Acting ICE Directory Thomas Homan told Fox News guest host Jason Chaffetz. “They’re doing the best job they can. They do it all to protect this border.”
