House Dems to push bill for universal gun background checks next week

House Democrats will flex their majority once again next week when they introduce legislation requiring more extensive background checks on gun purchases.

The bill requires background checks for all gun sales, including private transactions. There will be a few exemptions like transfers between family members or the “temporary use of a gun for hunting,” according to Politico.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and colleague Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif., will introduce the bill, called HR 8, on the same day as the eighth anniversary of the shooting of former U.S. Rep. Gabby Gifford.

She was shot and nearly killed during a campaign appearance on Jan. 8, 2011, in Tucson by a mentally deranged Jared Lee Loughner, who was once known as being very liberal. Gifford recovered by resigned from Congress a year later.

Thompson said the bill is bipartisan but declined to name which Republicans are signing onto the measure. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., has supported such legislation in the past and will co-sponsor the current bill as well, Politico reports.

It’s a near-certainty the bill will pass because Democrats now control the lower chamber. But the measure faces an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled Senate. Should it pass there, however, it’s unlikely POTUS Donald Trump will sign it, given his public support for gun rights.

“Since the shooting at Sandy Hook, the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force has been fighting for a chance to pass legislation that will help save lives,” Thompson said in a statement.

“Finally, with our new majority that ran on helping to prevent gun violence, we will introduce a bipartisan, universal background checks bill. We will hold hearings, we will have a vote, and this legislation will finally pass the House.”

Gun rights groups note that only about one-fifth of gun sales are made without a background check. Also, some have noted in the past that the Second Amendment does not contain a provision requiring government approval for gun sales, making any such legislation unconstitutional.

They also note that Democrats continue to show disdain for gun rights by introducing and supporting measures that seek to curb them.

2 Comments on House Dems to push bill for universal gun background checks next week

  1. It’s not complicated. “Universal” checks means the law abiding are all registered. It’s perfectly obvious Democrats want total power and slaves. And people with guns make poor slaves.

  2. Ps: If democrats want to “save lives” someone mention the word “abortion” to them….
