Here we go again: NEW migrant caravan forming in Central America

As the partial government shutdown enters its fourth week and Democrats continue refusing to provide POTUS Donald Trump with a paltry $5.7 billion in funding for his long-promised border wall, another migrant caravan is forming in Honduras.

As reported by The Keene Sentinel, the plan is for migrants to set out next week “on a journey that will once again test the immigration policies of Mexico and the United States.”

Like last year, word of the new caravan is being spread via social media, the local report noted.

“We’re looking for refuge. In Honduras, we are being killed,” a flier on social media claims, adding that planners are shooting for a 5 a.m. departure on Jan. 15 from the northern Honduran city of San Pedro Sula.

Officials with the Mexican government say they are preparing for the caravan’s arrival.

“We have information that a new caravan is forming to enter our country in mid-January,” Olga Sánchez Cordero, the interior minister, said at a news conference Monday. “We are already taking the necessary steps to ensure the caravan enters in a safe and orderly way.”

When caravans from Central America reached Mexico in October, authorities closed one of the main border crossings into the country. However, they permitted thousands of migrants to swim across a river separating Mexico from Guatemala. Afterward, migrants continued trekking north through Mexico, most without travel documents.

But this time, according to Sánchez Cordero, the Mexican government is planning to place border guards at 370 crossing points near the border, which will be “controlled to prevent the entry of undocumented people.”

However, she suggested that some members of the caravan might be permitted to enter Mexico legally after applying for a visa.

Meanwhile, congressional Democrats are continuing to resist the White House’s demand for border wall funding — even though, obviously, it’s becoming more and more necessary and despite the fact that Border Patrol officials are calling for new barriers as well.

Worse, one of the agencies affected by the shutdown is the Department of Homeland Security, to which ICE, the Border Patrol, and Customs and Border Protection all fall under. For the first time on Friday, agents missed their paychecks because majority Democrats in the House have not sent the Senate a funding bill that includes money for the president’s wall.

Democrats in the past have voted to fund border barriers — during the administrations of George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The amount of funding POTUS Trump is requesting amounts to less than 1 percent of the entire federal budget. — Jon Dougherty
