Though the late President Ronald Reagan has been held up as the gold standard for the Right, a former staffer says that POTUS Donald Trump’s conservative bona fides are better than those of the Gipper, at least when it comes to the appointment of federal judges.
President of the Leadership Institute and former Reagan White House staffer Morton Blackwell complimented POTUS Trump recently in an interview with The Western Journal for picking “philosophically” conservative judges.
What’s more, Blackwell noted that the president’s judicial picks are even more conservative (read constitution-minded) than Reagan’s nominees.
“Who would have thought that Donald Trump would have in two years of judicial nominations, come up with the most legally conservative judges than any president that has ever come up with,” Blackwell added.
“In ‘80, I was a Reagan delegate and I worked three years on the Reagan White House staff, and I love Ronald Reagan,” he continued. “But I believe Donald Trump has done a better job of picking philosophically conservative judges than even Reagan did.”
During his first two years, POTUS Trump has appointed two justices to the U.S. Supreme Court — Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, the latter of whom faced stiff and unreasonable resistance from Democrats who brought out several women claiming Kavanaugh sexually assaulted them in high school and college. None of the claims were corroborated and some of the accusers have since recanted.
As for Blackwell, he not only served on Reagan’s staff, he also helped select judicial nominees, which included the late, great constitutionalist Justice Antonin Scalia.
Reagan picked five nominees to the Supreme Court, with four being confirmed by the Senate; one — Robert Bork — was essentially railroaded by Democratic opponents.
