Once again, Democrats are proving that in order to be a member of the Donkey Party you have to have been born without the hypocrisy gene.
On Friday, the Washington Post, not much for journalistic ethics and integrity these days, ran with a story lamenting a Trump administration proposal to ‘relocate’ — as in, dump — masses of illegal aliens in cities where political rivals live.
The Post noted:
White House officials have tried to pressure U.S. immigration authorities to release detainees onto the streets of “sanctuary cities” to retaliate against President Trump’s political adversaries, according to Department of Homeland Security officials and email messages reviewed by The Washington Post.
Trump administration officials have proposed transporting detained immigrants to sanctuary cities at least twice in the past six months — once in November, as a migrant caravan approached the U.S. southern border, and again in February, amid a standoff with Democrats over funding for Trump’s border wall.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district in San Francisco was among those the White House wanted to target, according to DHS officials. The administration also considered releasing detainees in other Democratic strongholds.
The paper went onto claim that the idea was first broached by the administration last fall, in a Nov. 16 email which asked officials at a number of federal agencies whether illegal migrants could be apprehended at the border and then bused “to small- and mid-sized sanctuary cities” — jurisdictions where local officials have passed formal ordinances forbidding their police agencies from cooperating with federal immigration enforcers.
The Post claimed that the White House informed ICE that the plan aimed to alleviate crowding at border detention facilities but also was designed to send a political message to Democrats in particular, as well as sanctuary jurisdictions.
The paper claimed the White House pressed ICE on the subject again in February but the agency’s “legal department” pushed back, saying it would be ‘inappropriate.’
The White House rejected the report saying, “This was just a suggestion that was floated and rejected, which ended any further discussion.”
Wow, what a petty, vindictive troll President Donald Trump must be, right? Hardly. If the Post’s story is accurate — and that’s a big ‘if’ these days, given its growing body of fake news — there is nothing new under the sun here.
Alabama.com reported in July 2016 that the Obama administration was considering doing the exact same thing — placing scores of illegal immigrants in the district of then-Sen. Jeff Sessions, an early supporter of POTUS Trump and a vehement opponent of illegal immigration:
U.S. Sens. Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions, in a joint letter to three top federal officials, criticized the Obama Administration’s proposal to consider two Baldwin County Naval airfields as temporary facilities to house unaccompanied youths who enter the U.S. illegally.
The letter was submitted one day after the Baldwin County Commission, on Tuesday, forwarded a similar request to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell.
“Transporting some of these juveniles more than 900 miles away from our southern border to the state of Alabama, instead of expeditiously and humanely sending them back to their homes, will only make the situation worse,” the letter states. “It rewards illegal conduct, and arguably renders the United States complicit in criminal conspiracies to violate our immigration laws.”
So really, the Trump administration was just engaging in a little turnabout being fair play and all that.
But wait, the hypocrisy gets even more profound.
One of the congressional offices to criticize the Trump proposal was none other than California Democrat and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated,” said Pelosi spokeswoman Ashley Etienne in a statement to the Post. “Using human beings — including little children — as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable.”
Wait — hasn’t Pelosi talked up the ‘value’ of allowing in all illegal aliens?
Why, yes. Yes, she has. In response to a question from CNS News, Pelosi said:
…[W]e do believe that there can be a bipartisan way for us to come together to honor the values of our country and recognize that newcomers to our country are frequently the constant reinvigoration of America; bringing their hopes, their dreams, their aspirations, their optimism, their courage, their determination to make the future better for their families, are American traits. And in doing so, these newcomers make America more American.
What better way to allow illegal aliens to realize their ‘hopes, dreams, aspiration, optimism, courage, and determination’ than to bring them to cities that have sanctuary policies?
And why would this be ‘cynical’, ‘cruel’ and ‘despicable?’ Aren’t Democratic sanctuary cities just waiting for illegal aliens with open arms? Why didn’t the mayors of those cities, upon reading the Post story, call up the White House and offer to take as many as Trump would send?
Listening to Pelosi’s spokeswoman, it sounds as though she and her boss are hiding a disdain — and, perhaps, bigotry? — of illegal aliens by opposing the administration’s plan to relocate them to Pelosi’s district.
Whatever the case, it’s obvious that the Trump administration was just channeling Obama when he considered sticking it to Sessions and Shelby a couple of years ago.
