As the 2020 field of Democratic presidential contenders grows by the hour, it seems, each new candidate takes just a little more oxygen out of the room, making it increasingly difficult a) to raise money; b) to be noticed; and c) to stand out from the crowd.
California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell, the original “truther” when it comes to tinfoil-hat conspiracies surrounding the “Trump-Russia collusion” hoax, thinks he’s found a way to separate himself: Become the incarnation of the USSR’s brutal, murderous dictator, Josef Stalin.
During an interview with CNN‘s Jake Tapper, the host managed to get Swalwell to suggest he would put gun owners in jail if they dared to do something as ‘nefarious’ and seditious as clinging to the Second Amendment:
TAPPER: So, gun control is the central plank in your campaign.
You wrote last year — quote — “We should ban possession of military- style semiautomatic assault weapons. We should buy back such weapons from all who choose to abide by the law. And we should criminally prosecute any who choose to defy it by keeping their weapons.”
Criminal prosecution for keeping assault weapons. What’s the punishment for people who don’t hand in their guns? Do they go to jail?
SWALWELL: Well, Jake, they would, but I also offer an alternative, which would be to keep them at a hunting club or a shooting range. And the reason I have proposed this is because these weapons are so devastating.
I have seen this as a prosecutor in the cases that I’ve prosecuted. We have seen these in the school shootings, from Sandy Hook to Parkland. And I was just at Parkland earlier this week doing a town hall there.
But it’s not just the violence that they have caused. It’s the fear, the immeasurable fear, that our children live in, because they are still on our streets. I want to get rid of that fear. I want to do what Australia did and New Zealand just recently did. I think this issue just needs some bold leadership to do it.
Remember, Swalwell is the guy who has continued to insist that POTUS Trump “colluded” with Russia despite special counsel Robert Mueller’s finding that no such thing happened.
But Swalwell is also the guy who suggested nuking gun owners who refused to go along with his authoritarianism.
Pro-gun advocate Joe Biggs tweeted at Swallwell, “So basically @RepSwalwell wants a war. Because that’s what you would get. You’re outta your f—— mind if you think I’ll give up my rights and give the [government] all the power.”
Swallwell responded, “And it would be a short war.”
“The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit,” the congressman tweeted. “I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.”
He added quickly, “No one is nuking anyone or threatening that,” but of course — that’s exactly what Swalwell was implying.
Why is it that Democrats are always talking about taking away or limiting Americans’ rights instead of finding ways to expand and protect them?
