An outspoken Georgia Republican has issued a challenged to Democrats to jump on board the Trump train and help the president come up with solutions to fix the growing crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border following a recent trip in which he said things he saw would “break your heart.”
Rep. Doug Collins, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, told Fox News‘ “Fox & Friends” program Friday said he doesn’t blame POTUS Donald Trump at all for what’s going on along the border and said he backs the president’s efforts to improve border security and combat illegal immigration.
“I don’t blame the president at all,” Collins said. “I just got back from the border, and what I saw at the border will break your heart. It is the perverse incentives that we have in our country that we will not fix the laws that are causing” wave after wave of migrants to stream towards the U.S.
“That’s why the president is doing what he’s doing” in attempting to both build new border walls and install other measures of security while trying to entice Democrats into helping to fix the nation’s broken asylum laws.
“He understands the pain of these families who believe in the hope that they can come here and that they will get a free pass, that they’ll get to come into America having to go through the rules and proper immigration channels,” Collins noted.
Worse, the Georgia Republican said, parents are putting very small children as young as a few months to a few years old “in danger” by trekking them thousands of miles north where danger awaits.
“We’ve got to fix this,” Collins said. “This is on Congress to fix. This is on us to do.”
When asked if he had spoken with any Democrats who were in favor of fixing what is broken in terms of immigration and asylum laws, Collins said there wasn’t much interest on that side of the aisle to get things done.
“What Democrats want to do is use these immigrants and these migrants as pawns,” he said. “They don’t want to fix this problem. They want to use it as a political issue to try and bash Republicans and bash the president.
“Here’s my challenge to the Democrats: I put a bill out there, Sen. [Lindsey] Graham (R-S.C.) has put a bill out there, where is your bill?” Collins continued. “Are [immigrants] more important to use them or to fix” the legal problems?
Collins also praised Border Patrol officials and agents whom he called “super heroes” for the work they are doing, with limited resources, in dealing with the national emergency and humanitarian crisis along the border.
During his trip last week, Collins said, “one of the agents looked at me and said, ‘We’re doing our job. Do yours.'”
On Friday, the Trump administration announced it would begin placing a 5 percent tariff on all goods imported from Mexico — a tariff that would increase to 25 percent by the end of this year — unless the Mexican government began doing more to stop the caravans from moving through their country.
