(NationalSentinel) A New Jersey Democrat is warning that his party’s headlong drive to impeach POTUS Donald Trump for no reason other than he occupies an office they want will come back to bite the Donkey Party next year.
In an interview with Fox News, Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-N.J.) said not only would the impeachment effort ultimately fail, but moderate voters sick of the bickering and lack of compromise in Congress would punish the offending party in the 2020 elections.
“Do you worry that if the Democratic caucus keeps beating the impeachment drum, it puts the majority and seats like yours at risk?” Fox News host Leland Vittert asked.
Van Drew responded, “sure, that’s a possibility,” that what he truly worries about it “what we’re doing in government.”
He noted that while the party’s Left-wing hard cases — in Congress, in Hollywood, and in academia — are screaming for Trump to be impeached over imagined ‘crimes,’ Van Drew notes the reality is it wouldn’t work out and would harm the country in the process.
“Whatever happens, it’s going to be a failed impeachment process,” he said.
“Do you think that if it is a failed impeachment process–” began Vittert’s next question.
“It will be,” Vittert jumped in. “It’s not going to go through the Senate,” where Republicans maintain a six-seat majority.
“Okay, assume that in evidence,” said Vittert. “Does that help Republicans and President Trump in 2020?”
“Yes,” said Van Drew. “You can’t go into an election and say ‘well, we’ve done a few things.’ And also we’re responsible for, and spent, a huge amount of time and a huge amount of money on a failed impeachment process.”
Democrats have essentially been the ‘Party of No’ since taking over the House majority. A rare moment of bipartisanship occurred last week when Democrats and some Republicans joined to pass a massive spending bill that made fiscal conservatives blanch.
Van Drew noted that impeachment is serious business and that it ought to be reserved only for the most obvious cases where a president has committed ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ — the constitutional standard for removing a chief executive from office.
POTUS Trump’s combative nature and demeanor, his desire to enforce all immigration laws, and his refusal to back down from the Swamp doesn’t meet those standards. Neither does being the subject of an effort to depose him by the Obama-led Deep State.
In my opinion, if we have a failed impeachment process, it’s going to be a very difficult election to win,” said Van Drew in closing, suggesting that it’s not just Democrat lawmakers in particular districts, but the party and the presidency overall the Democrats stand to lose if they pursue impeachment and fail, The Blaze noted.
